The Panthers strike again

From the Sports Desk

On the 11th May, on a very dark, wet day the St John’s Panthers girls football team made their way across London to compete in the South London special league. Our team is relatively new to football but have been training hard with the Tottenham Hotspur development team.

In our first game we drew Glebe who were very strong opponents. The stand in coaches for the competition were Sam Beaman and Jacky Toohey who set out their team with Kara as skipper and from the whistle you could tell that our girls wanted to win. Dana and Isabelle worked like Trojans in the middle of the park with Bethany, Shanee and Salma defending like a wall. At one point running into three opposition players Bethany was heard to shout, “Get out of my way” as she barged through to win the ball. With two minutes left on the clock, Kara struck a long ball into the oppositions end. Isabelle and Dana attacked the ball causing the goalkeeper to make a mistake and the ball trickled across the line. St Johns were 1-0 up going into the injury time when disaster struck. A slip at the back and Glebe’s striker run through and scored an equaliser. The game ended a draw. The next two games were hard fought but luck was not on our side. Sam and Jackie had to switch the team, when Izzy had to rest through illness and Kara took up a new position up front with Dana taking up a goalkeeping position. We dug deep and showed some serious grit with Kara narrowly missing the post and Dana making saves whist facing the opposite direction. All in all, our team showed amazing team spirit and walked away with the silver medal.  A top performance from the Panthers!
